A Frozen Hell: Chosin Reservoir
In late November 1950, approximately 30,000 United Nations troops—primarily U.S. Marines and soldiers—found themselves surrounded by over 120,000 Chinese soldiers in the frozen mountains near the Chosin Reservoir.
What followed was one of the most brutal and heroic fighting withdrawals in military history. Through temperatures plunging to -35°F, the "Frozen Chosin" fought their way out, covering 78 miles of treacherous mountain terrain to reach the port of Hungnam.
Their motto became legend: "Retreat, Hell! We're just attacking in a different direction."
