Strategic Background

Understanding the Korean War context, Chinese intervention, and the events that led to the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.

June - November 1950

The Korean War Begins

On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea, beginning the Korean War. The surprise attack caught South Korean and American forces off guard, and within days, the Republic of Korea Army was in full retreat.

General Douglas MacArthur orchestrated a brilliant amphibious landing at Inchon on September 15, 1950, cutting off North Korean supply lines and turning the tide of the war. UN forces recaptured Seoul and pushed north, crossing the 38th parallel in pursuit of the retreating enemy.

By October 1950, UN forces had captured Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, and were advancing toward the Yalu River—the border with China. Victory seemed imminent. But unknown to UN commanders, a massive Chinese force was secretly crossing the Yalu.

Chinese Intervention

As UN forces approached the Chinese border, Mao Zedong made a fateful decision that would alter the course of the war.

China's Decision to Enter

Mao viewed the UN advance as a direct threat to Chinese security. With American forces approaching the Yalu River, China's industrial heartland in Manchuria seemed vulnerable.

In October 1950, China secretly deployed the People's Volunteer Army (PVA), calling them "volunteers" to avoid an official declaration of war against the United States.

Secret Movement

Over 300,000 Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River undetected. Moving only at night and hiding in mountains during the day, they achieved complete tactical surprise.

UN intelligence failed to detect the massive Chinese buildup. When the attack came, American commanders were shocked by the scale of the Chinese force.
